Abstract:
No archaeological material had been recovered from the study area itself. The fields which made up the site appeared to have remained open for at least 3/400 years, and to have been used for most of that time as orchards or rough grazing. The broader area, however, was extremely rich in archaeology. The boundary of the scheduled ancient monument passed within a few hundred metres of the site, and Butler's Court farm itself was known to have been occupied since at least the medieval period. The potential therefore existed for the survival of archaeological deposits from various periods. Cropmarks to the north-east suggested a Romano-British trackway heading towards the study area. It was thus possible that the trackway continued across the site itself. Other field boundaries associated with the track were also a possibility. Evidence of medieval occupation may also have survived. The irregular arrangement of the field boundaries within the study area prompted speculation that they reflected an earlier layout of the site, predating the current 17th century farm. It was also possible that ponds seen on early maps of the site were medieval in origin. [Au]
