Abstract: |
Archaeological monitoring was undertaken during the excavation of footing trenches together with concrete piles in order to investigate the possibility of medieval remains surviving in the back yard areas between the St Johns Street shop frontage and the town wall which formerly ran along the back of the property. Although an 'old topsoil' survived in this area there was no evidence of an earlier building. The most interesting feature was a pit, which contained a single 11th or 12th century pottery sherd.
