Abstract: |
Six evaluation trenches were excavated as part of the planning process prior to the redevelopment of the site. There was no evidence for occupation on the site prior to the 20th century and no significant archaeological features or finds were recorded. All the trenches revealed a straightforward and broadly comparable sequence of natural solifluction and colluvial deposits overlain by relatively shallow soil horizons. There was widespread evidence for activity relating to the development of Queen Mary's Hospital in the earlier part of the 20th century. One trench revealed a part of a large infilled water reservoir that had been constructed around 1900. The subsoil deposits in the northern part of the site produced two residual struck flints and one abraded potsherd of possible Roman date. [Au(abr)] |
