Abstract: |
The route of the proposed bypass was subject to an archaeological evaluation. Despite historical maps revealing two trackways of probable 19th century date no traces of these were located either as geophysical anomalies or archaeological features within trial trenches. It was therefore likely that these were not constructed tracks with surfaces and defining/drainage ditches but were routeways defined (if at all) by hedges or gaps in the ploughed strips of land. Although geophysical survey tentatively identified pit and ditch type anomalies potentially of human origin these were not located within the trial trenches. It was therefore likely that these anomalies were the result of slight variations in the natural. Only one feature of archaeological origin was identified and this was clearly of modern date.
