Abstract:
An evaluation was undertaken which comprised of trial trenching and a magnetometer survey. One definite, and one possible, pit was discovered, plus a substantial ditch. Both the definite pit and the ditch contained worked flint flakes. Field scanning on the site recovered moderate quantities of mainly Later Neolithic or Early Bronze Age flint work. A virtual absence of any ceramic types before the later post-medieval period may have suggested that the features could tentatively be put forward as being of Later Neolithic or Bronze Age date. A pronounced linear anomaly was identified on a ENE-WSW alignment by the magnetometer survey. Excavation and field scanning identified this as the ploughed out remains of a coke, ash and iron filled linear feature. Residual coke was subsequently observed spread across the field for some distance either side of the feature. Late post-medieval ceramics dated the activity to the 19th/20th century. It was possibly associated with earrly mechanised farming. [Au(abr)]
