Abstract: |
The assessment revealed that the area seemed to have remained undeveloped low-lying and marshy until the development of Llanthony Priory in the 12th century. Despite Gloucester's impressive early history, Roman and Saxon occupation seemed to have been confined to within the Roman city with any expansion to the west and north. It appeared unlikely that any Roman remains existed within the site and there was no evidence for any Saxon occupation. The church, cloister and ancillary buildings of Llanthony Priory were contained within the designated area of the Scheduled Ancient Monument. The development, however, may have possible effects upon buried remains of the Priory and the setting of above ground remains.[Au(abr)] |
