Abstract: |
An evaluation comprising desk-top study, trial excavation and magnetometer and walkover surveys was carried out within two fields which lay within the area of a shrunken medieval village. The site formed part of an extensive landscape of medieval fields with well-preserved ridge and furrow. No significant anomalies were identified by the geophysical survey. During the walkover survey, four broad and well-preserved ridge and furrow earthworks and a low earthwork, possibly a headland, were noted in the western field. The trial excavation revealed a group of shallow gullies and pits of uncertain date. The ridge and furrow earthworks were found to have been truncated by a late 18th or 19th century building with brick foundations. Artefacts included several sherds of medieval pottery, and tile, pottery and bone fragments of post-medieval to recent date. [AIP] |
