Abstract: |
A watching brief was carried out during the construction of a box culvert unit and associated sewer pipe groundworks, at a site where two Bronze Age burnt mounds had previously been identified. A test trench was excavated in order to locate one of the mounds (Mound 2), but no trace of this feature was revealed during either excavation or the monitoring of works, although it could be discerned in the bank of the nearby stream. It had originally been thought that the greater part of the mound lay beneath the south bank of the stream. However, the results of the watching brief suggested either that the mound lay beneath the northern bank, or that the feature visible in the bank was all that remained of the mound. The profile and southern extent of Mound 1 were recorded during the watching brief, and a former stream channel was identified. [AIP] |
