Abstract:
A desk-based assessment was carried out prior to development, which demonstrated that the site lay within the bounds of the medieval college of Merton. The results of a watching brief, which had revealed surviving medieval deposits, were used, as they would be removed by the construction of a deep basement. In addition, the eastern wing of the proposed building was situated on the line of a north-south wall shown on Agas' map of 1578 and was partly revealed in test Pit 4. Proposed hard landscaping on the eastern side of the Yard may impact the remains of a medieval stone wall located beneath the cobbled surface. The foundation piles and ground beams of the proposed bicycle storage building would extend to a depth that would impact any medieval or earlier archaeological deposits that survived within their footprint. The proposed stairs beside Grove House was located on the line of a medieval street, but was unlikely to involve ground disturbance of a sufficient depth to disturb any deposits associated with the road that may survive.
