Abstract: |
An archaeological desk-based assessment was undertaken in response to proposals for the residential development of the site. Following consideration of cartographic, historic and SMR evidence, the site lay in an area of moderate archaeological potential. The majority of the site lay on the fringes of the historic hamlet of Kings Enham but only the eastern end of the proposed new access road was close to the core of these settlement. The exact location of the medieval settlement and any Saxon precursors was unclear but could have been located further to the west than the present day hamlet. The main potential of the site stemmed from its relatively large size within an area of chalk downland which was generally rich in archaeology and from which here had been a number of sites and finds recorded locally.
