Abstract:
Desk-based study and a field evaluation were undertaken prior to the preparation of a development brief. The site lay in a Conservation Area, and was partly overlain by a Scheduled Ancient Monument, the course of the town defences of Roman Dorchester. Trial trenches and an auger survey combined to identify the middle and outer Roman defensive ditches at the site, as well as the external associated counterscarp bank. Artefacts dating from the prehistoric period to modern times were recovered across the site. Geophysical survey revealed a linear anomaly near the bank, interpreted as either a ditch or a sequence of closely spaced pits. No other archaeological features were identified. It was concluded that any redevelopment proposals should give due consideration to the setting of the Scheduled Ancient Monument and the 19th century buildings at the site. [Au(adp)]
