Abstract: |
An archaeological desk-based assessment was undertaken as a preliminary stage in the development proposals. Limited research on the more recent developments on the site suggested that the whole block of land had been subject to building activity in the 19th and 20th centuries. The effect on the surviving archaeological deposits would have varied from building to building, but with an increased risk to the underlying deposits in basemented areas. Archaeological monitoring of building work within the study area had been extremely limited, but from historical and cartographic evidence it was possible to suggest that the potential for archaeological deposits was reasonably high, particularly from the Roman, Saxo-Norman and medieval period. There was also limited potential for prehistoric remains, given that the underlying geology was the first and second river terrace gravels. However survival of all early deposits may have been considerably fragmented by the foundation works associated with the building developments of the previous 200 years. [Au(adp)] |
