Abstract: |
An archaeological watching brief was undertaken on the excavation of an electric cable trench on the west side of the barn. The barn dated from c.1300 and was formerly part of a monastic grange belonging to Beaulieu Abbey. The footings for what was thought to have been a substantial wall was found at a point 12m from the west wall of the barn. A cobbled surface, almost certainly contemporary with the wall was also recorded. At the west end of the trench large volumes of dumped rubble were recorded. This was almost certainly material redeposited when 19th century buildings laying on the west side of the barn were demolished in the 1960s. [Au(abr)] |
