Abstract:
The available archaeological, historical and cartographic evidence suggested that there was a settlement at Sutton probably from the late Saxon period. There was no evidence to suggest where the settlement was located, but it may well have been around the area of the present church. This was based on the assumption that the Saxon church was in the area of the present church. Sutton was something of a backwater through most of the medieval period, being away from the main highways between London and the surrounding towns. Nevertheless the settlement grew from the medieval period until it was a reasonable sized settlement in the post-medieval period. From the Victorian period, Sutton became a popular village for commuters away from, but close to, London, particularly with the coming of the railways. Sutton Court was a large residence which was certainly there in the 18th century and may well have been there in the Tudor period and its remains lay below the present police station and along the Carshalton Road.
