Abstract:
A site at Picardy Manorway was proposed for redevelopment. Outline planning consent for the redevelopment of the site was subject to a PPG16 style archaeological planning condition. The gravels present across the study area may have formed palaeo-landsurfaces in the Mesolithic period. However, high gravels, which might have formed a focus for post Mesolithic settlement and activity were completely absent. Two peat deposits were present on the study site. The lower peat unit probably correlated with the Tilbury II peat unit and was of Mesolithic/Early Neolithic date. The upper peat unit probably correlated with the Tilbury III peat unit and was of Late Neolithic/Early Bronze Age date. The study area had a low to moderate archaeological potential for the Mesolithic, Neolithic and Bronze Age periods and a moderate archaeological potential for the Roman period. Deposits of this date may occur in association with the peats or upper alluvial clays. The alluvial deposits, and in particular the peats, had a high palaeoenvironmental potential. The study site was thought to have a relatively low archaeological potential for the Saxon, early medieval, late medieval and post-medieval periods, although evidence for agricultural activity may be identified. Past post-depositional impacts on the site were likely to have been very limited. The archaeological impact of the proposed development was limited to the piled foundations of the proposed residential units. These would impact on approximately 0.25% of the site area. Across over 99% of the site area any archaeological deposits present could be preserved in situ. [Au(adp)]
