Abstract: |
An archaeological watching brief was undertaken on the auguring of boreholes in advance of the building of a new beauty salon. The site was situated within the known boundaries of the Middle Saxon settlement known as Hamwic. A previous watching brief on the site comprising six machine dug trenches uncovered evidence of ground disturbance associated with intensive building work over the last two centuries including brick cellars and early modern rubbish pits cutting into the natural brickearth. Borehole 1 exposed stratigraphy comprising four layers and no features. One fragment of cow mandible was recovered from one layer. The stratigraphy in borehole 2 was not visible. [Au(abr)] |
