Abstract:
The town of Bedford was in the historic heart of the county and could be traced back to the Saxon period. It was divided into two main parts, north and south, by the River Ouse, to which it owed both its origins and its continued development. The town centre lay to the north, with its principal north-south axis provided by the High Street. Most of the town centre lay within a Conservation Area containing 41 listed buildings and four SAMs, while the entire centre was recognised as a site of potential archaeological significance. This document dealt with one of its richest portions, the Castle Lane area. Much of this was intended for regeneration and redevelopment. The area contained, amongst other structures 14 Listed Buildings along High Street, Mill Street, and Castle Lane, the scheduled monuments of the Castle and a medieval lime kiln, and three registered Museums. - the Bedford Museum occupying the old Higgins Brewery, the Cecel Higgins Art Gallery, and the Bunyan Museum. This volume contained the statements of significance and policies that have been formulated for the Castle Lane Site. [Au(abr)]
