Abstract:
An evaluation was carried out at the proposed site of a porch, which was to be built onto an existing doorway into the north aisle of a church. The nave and aisles of the church dated from the 14th century. During the evaluation, fragmented human bone was recovered from all of the excavated contexts. The surface of the natural deposits was not clearly identified. The lowest layer of clay may have represented the weathered top of the natural sequence, but it contained rubble and human bone fragments, and was therefore at least partly man-made. It was the only layer revealed which clearly pre-dated the construction of the present north wall of the church, and may have represented the subsoil of the earlier graveyard, being a mixture of clay and stone upcast from grave digging as well as grave infill. The construction of the present north wall was represented by a construction trench and stepped foundations exposed in the eastern part of the excavations. Layers of clay and rubble encountered in all parts of the excavation trench appeared to have been upcast from the foundation trench. Evidence of graves cutting these layers was visible. The later layers excavated were generally rubbly loams, containing 19th century pottery, and probably represented grave fills. The graveyard was in use as a burial ground until the 1870s. Lias slab paths and the infills of drainage trenches likely to have been of later 19th century date, a gas pipe trench and a soakaway were also revealed. [AIP]
