Abstract: |
Wessex Archaeology was commissioned to undertake a photographic survey to record standing buildings prior to their demolition. A subsequent archaeological evaluation after demolition of the garage building sought to establish whether archaeological remains were present which would be destroyed by the redevelopment of the site. Three trenches were excavated by a mechanical excavator within the footprints of the new building. The results of the two trenches excavated adjacent to the street frontage suggested that the original land surface had been truncated by a former iron foundry on that part of the site. Deposits of slag immediately below a concrete forecourt directly overlay deposits of natural gravel. A shallow gully was sealed by the slag. A trench to the rear of the plot revealed that topsoil overlay fluvial gravel. The evaluation had therefore demonstrated that it was unlikely that any significant archaeological remains survived on the site and no further archaeological work was proposed. [Au(abr)] |
