Abstract: |
The earliest phase of activity was datable to the 12th century with a possible ditched enclosure. Other features in these trenches may also have been related to this enclosure but no datable artefacts were found. Other features in this trench were of uncertain date and may have been related to later post-medieval activity of Westbury Farm. Features in Trench 11 provided evidence that there was settlement on the site by the 13th century. Three ditches were located which probably marked an earlier boundary to Westbury Farm along with the School Lane Frontage, with which they were aligned. The presence of Roman tile incorporated into the medieval and post-medieval features indicated that there may well have been Roman activity in the vicinity of the site, but no actual features of Roman date were found.
