Abstract:
An evaluation programme involving trial trenching, test-pitting and a resistivity survey was undertaken over a three month period, at the proposed site of a quarry. The investigated features and deposits could be divided into eight areas, including a Bronze Age field system and settlement, a round barrow, scatters of worked flints associated with pit clusters and post holes, a later Bronze Age enclosure and a ring ditch. Most of the sites seemed to have hosted multiple episodes of settlement. High-density non-featured scatters appeared to have preceded the feature-defined sites in a number of instances, with earlier finds being redeposited within later features. Early Neolithic flintwork, for example, was recovered from a Bronze Age settlement cluster. Post-settings were recorded within basal lengths of the ring ditch. With its hengi-form characteristics, this monument may have been of Late Neolithic to Early Bronze Age date. Artefacts were recovered from the upper fills of the ditch, including a Middle Bronze Age copper alloy bracelet. Although the relationship of the ring ditch to the nearby settlement features was unknown, the relatively abundant artefact assemblage may have derived from there. [AIP]
