Abstract:
An archaeological assessment was undertaken for a stretch of the A696 and adjoining land between Kirkwhelpington village and Knowesgate hamlet. It was concluded that a total of five identifiable landscape features of cultural heritage value would be directly impacted by the proposed road improvements. A number of other sites, most of which were recorded on the county SMR, fell within one kilometre of the site and may be visually or otherwise indirectly impacted. It was considered that the various features and monuments catalogued formed part of a closely interrelated, well-preserved historic rural landscape. Despite their excellent state of preservation, however, none of the individual features identified on the line of the proposed works was considered of sufficient significance to warrant rejection of the road improvement proposal. The impacts would, however, require mitigation by record. Accordingly, specific recommendations provided here included the recommendation that reasonable attempts should be made, where possible, to mitigate the impact of development works by avoidance. Where that was not possible, as was clearly the case within the two bends to be straightened, survey records should be made of earthwork features to be destroyed or obscured. Additionally, a section of boundary bank should be recorded by excavation. Any other monuments or features threatened by access routes or other works should first be recorded photographically or by survey, as appropriate. [Au(abr)]
