Abstract:
An archaeological field evaluation was undertaken in advance of the development of the site. The site lay immediately adjacent to the River Wandle. The alluvial deposits of the River Wandle and the Thames to the west of the Wandle mouth had produced evidence for Upper Palaeolithic and Mesolithic Communities, whilst Late Bronze Age metalwork had been found in the Wandsworth-Putney and Battersea reaches of the Thames. More generally, the River Wandle may well have been utilised during the post-medieval period for industrial purposes. Archaeological monitoring of a geotechnical test pit recorded the top of an alluvial sequence c.0.90, below ground level. Borehole logs confirmed this alluvium to be up to 2.50m thick. Subsequently a single evaluation trench was excavated through the modern overburden to the top of the alluvial deposits. The alluvium proved too soft to safely allow further excavation by stepping the trench to the required depth. As a result two percussion auger cores removed samples of the alluvial sequence for analysis. A sondage was then dug through the alluvium which revealed river gravels overlain by a sequence of two alluvial silty clay deposits and sealed by a later of redeposited clay, presumably for ground raising. Overlying this make-up layer was approximately 1m of modern dumped refuse, sealed by concrete. [Au(abr)]
