Abstract: |
A watching brief was carried out during the excavation of foundations for an extension to a church. The church's date of origin was unknown, but the present standing fabric probably dated from the 14th century. During the watching brief, the outlines of at least two graves were identified. These were left unexcavated. A possible pit and a probable foundation trench for an overlying brick dwarf wall surrounding a post-medieval monument were also observed. Much of the area examined had been disturbed by a post-medieval burial vault and other features. An Anglo-Saxon spindle-whorl and two sherds of Saxo-Norman pottery were found, and demolition rubble relating to the well-documented destruction of the nave by fire in the 18th century was noted.
