Abstract:
The site occupied an area straddling the medieval Fleet, a canalised watercourse connected to the Humber via the tidal Hedon Haven. Two trenches revealed traces of 12th to 14th century medieval timber framed buildings cut into natural clay. Associated with the earliest phase was a hearth, which may have been for smithing; a slightly later phase included a pit containing coal and possible burnt clay hearth lining with iron-based accretions. Fragments of coal and slag were found in other sampled contexts. In the phase 3 dumps were cut several brick structures representing ranges of outbuildings set around the former walled garden of the Old Hall on the Fletchergate frontage to the south. The Old Hall was built by the former Hedon Mayor Henry Waterland shortly after 1700, and two stamped bottles, one bearing his name and the date 1716, the other his initials, were found in a pit in the garden. The buildings were completely rebuilt along the similar lines in the first half of the 19th century and remains in modified form into the later 20th, when a housing development was constructed on most of the former garden site.
