Abstract:
A Stage 1 Assessment of the impact of the proposed A429 Barford Bypass on the Cultural Heritage was carried out by the Field Archaeology Section of the Warwickshire Museum. The initial study corridor contains two Scheduled Ancient Monuments (Warwickshire Monument 141, SMR Refs WA 966 and 5159; Warwickshire Monument 142, SMR Ref WA 967) and eleven other archaeological sites. The Scheduled Monuments cover a complex of prehistoric/Romano-British settlements, showing as cropmarks, to the east of Sherbourne House. Other important sites include other prehistoric/Romano-British cropmark settlement enclosures to the west of Barford, and Barford Bridge, a late 18th century structure on the site of a medieval bridge and earlier ford. No Registered Parks and Gardens were identified within the study area but there are 30 Listed Buildings, one Grade II*, the others Grade II, as well as part of the Barford Conservation Area. All but one of the Listed Buildings lie within the built up area of Barford village. Recommendations for a Stage 2 Survey to involve more intensive documentary and air photograph research, and a walkover survey, are made in the report.[AIP]
