Abstract: |
An archaeological watching brief was carried out during the installation of lighting ducts to the cellars of Dr. Johnson's Buildings to fufil a condition on planning permission. Two trenches were opened however the natural geology was not reached in either excavation. Trench 1, (1.2m by 3m and 2.8m deep) failed to reveal any archaeological features. Trench 2 (1.3m by 2.4m and 3.2m deep) revealed a medieval morter make-up deposit which overlay a dark brown silt with oyster shell and tile fragments which was also probably a medieval make-up layer.
