Abstract: |
Four trial trenches and four test pits were excavated across the site as an evaluation prior to the proposed development of the site. The site produced a substantial sequence of early alluvial deposits which suggested that it was strongly influenced by the river regime of the Thames, with the majority of the site being part of a broad channel environment. Marshy episodes were also indicated as part of a broad channel environment. Thin organic, peaty horizons were exposed, but these appeared to have been redeposited during erosion phases from the Thames. Prehistoric flints of a Mesolithic/Early Neolithic date were recovered in the vicinity of a sandy horizon which was part of a delta-type deposition sequence. The alluvial sequence was sealed by made ground consisting of predominantly 18th and 19th century dumps and demolition layers. [Au(adp)] |
