Abstract:
The building and site that has generally become known as Nash's Sack Warehouse is situated on the south bank of the River Wye, a short distance to the east of the Wye Bridge. The warehouse has been empty and abandoned for many years. Plans to redevelop the site were submitted in 1985 but were not implemented, and the buildings continued to deteriorate for several years until in 1994 the site was taken over by H.E. Coombes Developments Ltd. A watching brief was organised to examine engineers' evaluation trenches (Hereford Archaeology Series, Report No 208) and the necessary foundation trenches when housing development commenced. Ten trenches were dug for foundations at the start of the conversion work. They ran across the width of both of the warehouse buildings. The average depth was 1.5m. Additional trenches were dug for services. They were examined by City of Hereford Archaeology Unit staff as and when practicable, but as a whole contained little of interest. Artefacts tended to be of Victorian date and the only feature of interest seen in plan or section was a layer of cobbles in the courtyard area which was approximately 0.3m below the present ground surface. This was interpreted as the wharf surface installed in the early 18th century. Parts of the foundations of the various side walls of the western warehouse buildings were exposed. Most of the undisturbed parts of the site are now safely buried underneath solid floors and the courtyard surface, and the remaining archaeological resource should remain safe for some considerable time.[AIP]\n
