Abstract: |
A watching brief was undertaken during groundworks for a new covered swimming pool. The site was thought to have been formerly part of the graveyard of St John the Baptist's Church, which lies immediately to the north of "The Old Vicarage". This proved to be the case, as a number of burials were encountered, aligned east-west along the line of a backfilled ditch, interpreted as a former churchyard boundary. The boundary ditch appears to have been backfilled in the mid-13th century, the inhumations being contemporary or near contemporary with the backfilling. An important assemblage of 12th-13th century pottery was recovered from the grave and ditch fills.[AIP]\n |
