Abstract: |
An archaeological evaluation was carried out on the Anchor Warehouse. It involved historical research and the machine excavation of trenches on both the western and the eastern side of the warehouse. The most important discovery was made on the western side, where the probable remains of part of Penryn's medieval harbour were uncovered. Comprised of piled slabs of killas (slate), the walling appeared to represent the eastern end of the harbour's western arm. The interpretation implied that further harbour remains may have survived elsewhere within that part of the proposed development. In addition to important buried archaeological remains, standing above ground on the western side of the warehouse was the earliest building to survive on the site. Part of a brewery depicted on the 1840 Tithe Map, th building predated the Anchor Warehouse. [Au(abr)] |
