Abstract: |
<summary>Desk-based assessment established that the area proposed for opencast coal extraction was situated on the postulated alignment of the Chesterfield to Damsbrook Roman road and that finds of Roman date had been recovered at Arkwright. Based on the tithe map of 1837 it was inferred that many field and property boundaries had continued in use into the Modern period. Field names were also identified suggesting areas of probable iron production, stone quarrying, a medieval lane, and a medieval gallows site. {italon}AIP{italoff} |
