Abstract: |
An archaeological evaluation was carried out on the site prior to proposed mineral extraction. During the course of this work deposits consisting of fly-tipped material were removed on the eastern part of the area under investigation. This exposed a homogenous topsoil deposit which extended over the whole of the site. To the south and west, towards the River Wandle, an apparently alluvial subsoil was noted. This was present in five of the eleven trenches (9 x 35m long, 2 x 40m long) excavated, and sealed linear features and pits cutting the gravel and sand subsoil. In the six remaining trenches the sand and gravel was directly overlain by the topsoil as were further linear cuts and pits. It was likely that the linear cuts were elements of early (pre-medieval) field systems. The pits could not obviously be assigned functions. No further cut features, save for modern land drains, were noted. Both horizontal deposits and the fills of cuts displayed a paucity of artefactual or cultural material. Only two flint waste flakes, showing signs of having been struck in antiquity, were recovered from cut features, while, surprisingly, only two pits contained small quantities of burnt flint. The absence of diagnostic finds from the alluvial subsoil and from cut features made the dating of the later problematic, though parallels from elsewhere in the area date from the Mid-Neolithic onwards. Locally, major depositional incidents in the Wandle valley, perhaps represented by the alluvial deposit to the south and west of the site, had been dated to at least as late as the Late Bronze Age-Early Iron Age.
