Abstract:
A heading shaft was dug in the Piazza in order to enable the new development at the Royal Opera House to be connected to existing sewer pipes. The shaft measured 2m by 2m and was located in the north-east corner of the Piazza. The shaft was surveyed and individual contexts digitised in respect of the National Grid to form part of the archive for the major archaeological excavations carried out at the Royal Opera House. The Saxon sequence revealed included evidence for gravel yards, occupation and later refuse and cesspits in an open area within the settlement. The finds indicated both craft activities such as textile production (eg. loomweights, threadpicker) as well as domestic occupation (eg. cooking pots, animal bone and quernstone). Imported pottery further demonstrated a link between the settlement at Lundenwic and the continent. A dark earth revealed contained only Saxon material and indicated the end of the settlement. The 18th century cobbled piazza surface was also revealed which dated to the granting of a royal charter for the holding of a market in 1670. [Au(adp)]
