Abstract:
Was undertaken as part of a project undertaken to locate and record the county of Essex's World War Two defence sites with the aim of providing an historical and archaeological database of the sites. Although Southend-on-Sea became a UA in 1998, the Borough was an integral part of Essex during World War II. As a result of the many sources of information which the project was able to access it was thought the great majority of the Borough's defence works had been identified by the survey. 186 sites had been recorded ranging from a single machine-gun post to the three-and-a-half-miles long chain of sea front anti-tank cubes. Nowhere else in the county had the World War Two Defences in Essex project recorded such concentrations of anti-tank defences and road barriers. Before the survey it was thought that Southend-on-Sea was probably the most heavily defended part of wartime Essex. This was indicated by War Time Contraventions 1968 which had more entries for Southend than any other area. The results of the survey had not only confirmed this but, at the same time, they bear testament to the formidable role played by Southend during the wartime years. [Au(adp)]
