Abstract: |
<summary>Two trenches were excavated on the south side of Flemingate to evaluate one of five proposed possible locations for new magistrates courts in Beverley. Features and deposits dated to the mid 12th century lay directly above natural boulder clay and included a north-south alignment of stakes, possibly representing an early fence. These deposits were overlain by two successive timber buildings which faced onto Flemingate, the first of late 12th to early 13th century date, the second of later 13th to 14th century date. At the rear of the site, 12th century levelling deposits were identified; these were sealed by a massive 13th to 14th century chalk foundation and cut by a number of 15th to 16th century pits. {italon}AIP {italoff} |
