Abstract: |
A desk based assessment of the proposed site of a residential development was undertaken. Artefacts dating from the Palaeolithic to the Bronze Age had been found in the surrounding area, and an Iron Age occupation site lay to the north-east. Evidence of Roman settlement had been recorded within Sherborne, whilst farmsteads and two Roman villas were known in the area. Considerable evidence of medieval activity had been observed in the vicinity of the site, including a cemetery. A late medieval Grade II* Listed Building and a Norman abbey church lay within the town. Previous ground investigations at the site had recorded fill and made ground; the fill contained fragments of brick, pottery and bone. A wall was also noted. It was concluded that although the site had been heavily disturbed, significant archaeological deposits could have survived in one area. [AIP] |
