Abstract: |
A watching brief on the site revealed some information relating to the construction of the culvert. The culvert was as a single phase structure, built after the start of smelting on the site. Alternatively the culvert may have originated as a canalisation of the Lemon Gill, with the vault in the area of the smelt mill being added at a later date, possibly to create a wider working area around the mill, or to prevent blocking or silting of the water course.
