Abstract: |
Marks and Spencers proposed to extend their store in Friar Street and so commissioned an archaeological evaluation, two trenches were excavated. The earliest feature in Trench 1 was a tile hearth of medieval date; it had been cut by a pit, possibly the result of the robbing of a wall. These features were overlain by a later mortar floor, which may have been the base for a brick floor. This was considered to be contemporary with a flint and mortar wall at the west end of the trench and to be of 17th century date. Trench 2 identified a badly truncated silt deposit, possibly the remnants of a floor make-up. The remaining area of the trench had been cut away by a post-medieval feature. [Au(abr)] |
