Abstract: |
A desk-based assessment of a proposed development site identified that no prehistoric or Saxon remains had been recorded in the vicinity, although Roman activity had been recorded in the general surrounding area. The site lay close to the core of medieval Ormskirk. Medieval buildings with burgage plots to the rear had fronted Aughton Street. Several important structures, including a dungeon, pillory, ducking stool and horse powered mill, were documented as being located in Aughton Street in the 18th century. Later buildings at the site had probably been cellared; it was nonetheless concluded that redevelopment of the land could provide an opportunity to examine the medieval development of Ormskirk.
