Abstract: |
The desk-based assessment produced evidence to support the suggestion that the site contained important evidence and remains of all periods from the time of the Roman occupation through to the 19th century. While development on the site over the past 100 years may have disturbed or removed some of the later post-medieval remains, it was considered likely that evidence of earlier occupation survived intact. While the nature, extent and condition of such remains were unknown, the location of the site together with the documentary record and results from previous archaeological excavation in the surrounding area clearly indicated the potential for remains of several periods. An evaluation excavation was considered a likely next step. [Au(adp)] |
