Abstract: |
A watching brief was carried out during topsoil stripping and the excavation of foundation trenches for two houses, at a site which lay adjacent to Stowey Castle, a Scheduled Ancient Monument. The remains of a mill and the supposed site of a church also lay nearby, and several medieval pottery kilns had been recorded in the vicinity. During the watching brief, a ditch or gully containing medieval and post-medieval pottery was recorded. This may have represented a continuation of a ditch which had bounded the more southerly of two baileys to the north-east of the castle. It was concluded that no other significant archaeological remains were present at the site. [Au(adp)] |
