Abstract:
The three trenches, which were excavated as part of the archaeological evaluation, revealed foundations of brick walls dating to the early 19th century. Two cesspits were associated with one of these walls. Pottery recovered from the cesspits dated the last fill to the late 19th century. The brick foundation walls and pier bases were likely to have been the walls of the malthouse owned by Thomas Harrington in the early 19th century. The cesspits were also likely to have been associated with four houses also owned by Thomas Harrington. Almshouses illustrated on 19th century plans were not located during the archaeological evaluation. A detailed map interpretation, comparing the 1907 Goad map with the current OS, appeared to show that the Almshouses were not located on the site, but were defined by the open space at the junction of Ferry Lane and the High Street.
