Abstract: |
Desk-based assessment of the proposed line of a sewer identified that no sites of archaeological interest had been recorded along the eastern stretch of the route, but that the western stretch crossed the conjectured line of a Roman road, Ryknild Street. Excavations to the south had revealed kiln debris and a considerable quantity of Romano-British pottery, including wasters, and the sites of two mills lay in the vicinity. The former site of the buildings of Holford Mill would not be affected by the proposed route, but a former pond associated with the mill would be crossed by the sewer. It was recommended that a watching brief should be carried out during works at the site of the pond, and in the area where the course of Ryknild Street was thought to be located. [AIP] |
