Abstract: |
A series of trenches were excavated within the gardens of the house, in order to investigate the past layout of the gardens. Within the trenches excavated across the lawns to the front of the house, spreads of gravel were identified at the edges of the lawns, indicating the position of paths that corresponded to cartographic evidence from the 1865 Ordnance Survey map. Layers of sand beneath the turf to either side of the central paved area suggested that the paving stones originally extended over a wider area. A trench was also excavated at one end of a raised walkway to the rear of the privy garden, and found evidence for the foundations of a small building shown there on a mid-19th century map of Cockermouth.
