Abstract:
A desk-based assessment was undertaken to determine the archaeological implications of a reservoir. Investigations within a 200m radius of the proposed development had located archaeological remains dating from the prehistoric, Romano-British, Anglo-Saxon, medieval and post-medieval periods. A moderate density of prehistoric remains was identified, distributed generally to the west of the River Witham. A well-documented Romano-British small town and Roman road, the Salters Way, occupied the fording point of the river in the centre of the study area. A second Roman road bound the east side of the area. There was a moderate to high probability of encountering well preserved and high value archaeological remains of the prehistoric and Romano-British periods in the central and western zones of the investigation area and along the routes of identified Roman roads. There was a low potential of encountering archaeological remains in most of the rest of the study area according to the concentration and nature of known finds and sites. [Au(abr)]
