Abstract:
An archaeological evaluation was undertaken in advance of a proposed residential flats development. Three evaluation trenches were excavated representing a 5.7% sample of the proposed development area. In addition, an assessment of the existing standing building, formerly the headquarters of the Sandgate Sea Cadets, was undertaken. The site lay adjacent to Sandgate Castle, constructed in 1539 and documentary sources indicated that during the later 18th century the site was used a shipyard. No archaeological evidence for related activity survived within the study area. Part of a north-south aligned wall and upright War Department marker stone were observed in trenches two and three. Both were shown on the 1st Edition OD map of 1872 and were probably contemporary with later modifications of Sandgate Castle during the Napoleonic period. A compacted and sloping surface possibly represented part of a slipway or access point to the beach. No other archaeological remains were identified. An assessment of the existing standing building combined with documentary survey, confirmed its original foundation in 1845 as the Sandgate National School. The building also displayed military modification, following its adoption by the First Cinque Ports Volunteer Artillery No.8 Company from 1866, when it was adapted for use as a drill hall and again, from the 1940s to the present, by the Sandgate Sea Cadets.
