Abstract: |
An archaeological evaluation was carried out in advance of a proposed residential development. There was no evidence of archaeological features in any of the trenches excavated, however, many finds were revealed. These consisted of Late Bronze Age through to 20th century pottery, post-medieval ceramic building material, clay pipes, a William III halfpenny and prehistoric to modern pottery found together, which indicated that they were residual. This, together with the dispersed nature of the finds, made it difficult to pinpoint any specific area of archaeological activity or to assess the significance of these finds within the landscape. It was probable that they came from nearby sites or from sites on the higher ground further up Deepdene Avenue. Or they may have been deposited and dispersed on site through agricultural activity. No further archaeological intervention was suggested. [Au(adp)] |
