Abstract: |
A rectified photographic survey and a watching brief was undertaken prior to and during the partial demolition of a standing limestone wall. The wall seemed to be the external wall of the former Roebuck Inn and may have retained elements of Coventry Hall, a medieval academic hall. There were at least three, possibly four, phases of build visible in the elevation of the wall, but the sequence of events was unsubstantiated. The observable phases were: the earlier limestone rubble construction at modern ground level; the addition or re-modelling of the upper storey and the possible infilling of ground floor opening with rubble stone; and finally the insertion of timber beams at the western end of the wall. The survey and watching brief of the wall and its demolition did not provide evidence of dateable features. [Au(adp)] |
