Abstract: |
An historic building study was undertaken of Staircase House, a Grade II* Listed Building. Staircase house comprised two properties which together formed a group of timber framed, stone and brick-built structures, ranging in date from the latter half of the 15th century through to rebuild phases in the 19th century, with some minor alterations in the 20th century. One of the most significant characteristics was that the building dated back to c.1460 and yet retained important elements of most of the structural alterations which had taken place in the subsequent 500 years. In addition, its development phases exhibited many of the typical characteristics associated with burgage development, with expansion both upwards and backwards. It must rank as one of the best preserved suites of medieval and post-medieval vernacular buildings in an urban context within the North-West. [Au(abr)] |
